The Killer Within
Crime families are using ordinary citizens to kill off opposing crime families. They drug them by slipping something in their drink or from a pin prick, leaving the person open to suggestions. They are told who to kill and then to kill themselves. The newspapers are calling these crimes 'Sleeper Murders'. A task force has been formed to catch the crime lords.
There are twists and turns in this short story that will keep you eagerly turning pages. This is an excellent, thrilling, suspenseful story that will leave the reader wanting more.

I very much enjoyed the repartee between Frank and his partner. I found myself a couple of times having a throw-back to Lennie Briscoe on Law & Order. Loved the premise. I'll try not to give it away, but the "paranormal" part of the book is very subtle. It's not at all a vampire/werewolf/magic type of paranormal, which is what I'm used to. But I thought the whole concept of how Kahn wove the paranormal element into an otherwise very normal plot was excellent.
Some of the writing was a bit clumsy at times and the passive voice ran a little rampant, but honestly, this was a great read, especially for a short book. I have a feeling, based on the end of the story (which I won't give away so you can read it for yourself), that there are yet to be further stories about Frank and his task force. Very interesting story. If you're a fan of "The Wire" or "Law & Order", you'll probably enjoy this book.

This short read was action packed from page one to the ending. I'm a mystery/suspense buff anyway, so this one had me from the title. The story is exciting, believable and well written, all though I found a few minor editing issues, but nothing that distracted from the story at all.
My biggest complaint with this story is the length. I wanted more! There is much more to Frank Arnold and in this story, we only get little glimpses of who the man really is and what his life is about. I hope Mr. Kahn is at his computer writing the next installment of Frank's life because inquiring minds want to know! This would make a fine novel and I look forward to reading whatever the author has in store next.

Average citizens are the new tools of the crime families. A drug has been developed that leaves the individual open to any suggestion- including assassination. These sleeper hits are increasing rapidly in number and Detective Frank Arnold suspects that something bigger is on the horizon soon. Hes determined to work his way onto the task force to stop the crime lords- but will his determination cost him everything?
Wow! Jason Kahns short story packs one heck of a powerful punch. While readers may suspect some of the twists in THE KILLER WITHIN, Jason Kahn ramps it up and adds a few more twists to surprise the reader. The shocking ending is unexpected and yet perfect for the overall concept of the story.
Jason Kahn uses the short story format to craft a tale that is both intriguing and well developed. The characters are multidimensional, not flat, allowing the reader to empathize with them. Frank is an excellent choice for the role of narrator as his passion and dedication are present throughout the story, making his observations even more shocking.
THE KILLER WITHIN epitomizes just what a short story should do. The tale is complete within itself while whetting the appetite of the reader for even more tales by Jason Kahn. Bravo!

Overview: 4 3/4 Stars
The plot was enjoyable and original. The story is of good short story length and has two good twists. The character development was well done, causing the reader to be shocked and empathize with the main character in turn.
At one point, the narrator, which was the policeman, referred to something his partner was feeling as a fact instead of adding a caveat, such as “she appeared to be.” It gave the view an omniscient feel for a moment and made me wonder if viewpoints had changed suddenly.
The writing was excellent with tight, concise sentences and minimal descriptions. The story had the feel of being the first few chapters of a novel, yet worked well as a short story. If there were a full novel, I would certainly be interested in purchasing it.
Editing: 4 Stars
There were a few editing errors, mostly just misplaced or missing commas.

Devil May Care
In “Devil May Care” by Jason Kahn, Cornelius checks the assignments for his busy workday and discovers he's to be a Reaper. But there must be some mistake; he's a Tormentor, one of the best in Hell. He calls his supervisor and discovers that no, there's no mistake. Subsequently, his field duty goes along until he hits a snag. And the snag’s name is Sandra. How can this angelic creature belong in Hell? She seems to know something about Cornelius, and that makes him nervous. The author uses a tone edged with humor, presenting tongue-in-cheek suppositions about Hell and the Devil. I found “Devil May Care” entertaining and educational.
